Ārue is a serene commune known for its royal history and scenic features. Much of the region overlooks the ocean, where you will find Tetiaroa, the coral reef ring belonging to the family of actor Marlon Brando. Wander through this intriguing region for a sense of its tranquility and impressive scenery.
Among the area’s highlights is the iconic Tomb of King Pomare V that stands on a headland overlooking the ocean. Note that this is the final resting place of the last king of Tahiti, who removed his mother’s remains from the memorial to make room for his own.
Visit the nearby Royal Pomare Cemetery for the graves of the king’s mother and the ancestral rulers from their family. Inspect the intricate array of rocks surrounding the elegant stony patches of the tombs.
At the James Norman Hall House, learn about a former inhabitant of the island, who fought for three distinct national militaries and authored important works. Examine the period furniture and imagine daily life here for him, his wife and his family in the 1930s.
Admire the yellow façade of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church across the street from the house museum. Enjoy a quick meal at one of the fast-food options nearby. Drive northeast for a few minutes to reach the Col du Tahara’a, which offers a spectacular view of Matavai Bay.
Venture inland to the Fautaua Waterfall. Hike from the parking lot through a tropical forest to get here and dive into the fresh water basin to cool down.
Find the small town of Ārue a little east of Papeete on the northern coast of Tahiti. Fly to Tahiti International Airport and rent a car to drive east for around 30 minutes to get here. Farther east are the towns of Māhina and Papeno’o.
