"Perla del Sole is a small, friendly B&B, though with a hotel-style reception, in the resort of Arenella, 8km from Syracuse. The hotel manager (who spoke excellent English) greeted us warmly and provided plenty of helpful information, such as maps, local restaurants, transport information, etc. The rooms were comfortable with all the essentials, including air conditioning (definitely needed at night, as it stays hot after sundown in Sicily) and free wi-fi, and were well cleaned daily. "The hotel is ideally situated as a base for walking around the sights of Ortigia and Siracusa. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable and the free water and soft drinks in the minibar were a bonus!
Breakfast was excellent with a wide choice of food and drink and set us up for each day.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful with special mention for those working at breakfast and on reception. Nothing was too much trouble and every breakfast request was delivered with speed and good grace."
Grand Hotel Des Ètrangers - The Leading Hotels of the World
8/10 Good
"We were a bit disappointed with our stay at Grand Hotel des Étrangers. While the hotel has been beautifully renovated and is in very good condition, it felt more like a generic luxury hotel and lacked the Sicilian character we were hoping for. The breakfast room also felt somewhat “hotel-like,” although the breakfast itself was delicious.
The staff were consistently friendly and helpful, and we especially loved the pool, which was heated to a very comfortable 28°C. The spa was also lovely, although it was frustrating that we were only told about the beautiful recovery room after our treatments were finished and we had already changed. The outdoor rooftop bar was lovely as well with comfy couches and a great view.
There were a few downsides that made the stay feel overpriced for what we received. Parking at the hotel costs €50 per day, but we found the public Talete lot nearby for only €15. Our room was quite basic and very small, facing an alley where there was constant noise from dumpsters being emptied. For roughly $1,000 per night, we expected much more.
Another issue was the loud music from the beach club on the ground floor, especially in the late afternoon and evening. We’re also not convinced it’s worth paying a premium for a sea-view upgrade, as the views over Siracusa are pleasant but not particularly spectacular.
Overall, the hotel has some strong points, but for the price, we expected a more special and authentic experience."
"Fantastic location, clean rooms and very friendly, helpful staff - this is a great option in Ortigia. The rooms are quiet without street noise and the staff were very helpful in organizing offsite, secure parking for our rental car.The room was missing a few amenities like a safe (there were instructions to use one), a few additional toiletries like body wash and conditioner, and an iron. Definitely add this one to your list of places to stay. "
"We stayed here for two nights and were extremely disappointed, especially considering this is supposed to be a five star property.
Our first night we were put in a room where the bathroom had a horrid smell that spread to the entire room. The room was also on the same floor as all the cleaning staff which was very odd. They offered us nothing in return for this very disappointing night.
Do not recommend staying here."
"Wow, what a fantastic hotel. Super location for the Archeological Park & Museum. Rooms and amenities were great, the pool and sundeck perfect for a drink. Staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was spectacular, everything you could want for a Sicilian breakfast. Rooms were modern and comfortable definitely a value for the price. "
"Very simple room but good value. Shower and towels very good. But from the street the hotel looks pretty run down, we were concerned. However, much nicer on the inside and staff really friendly. "
"The in-room WiFi wasn’t working and they said it wouldn’t be working. That the in-room was a third party and they had no control!!
Out coffee table was about to fall apart. Maintenance did come to try and save it but they couldn’t. So we had to live with it for the duration of our stay. The bar was never staffed and we had to go search for someone to assist.
This is not a 5 star or 4 star hotel. It is in desperate need of help"
