Angra dos Reis Port

Angra dos Reis Port showing a bay or harbor
Watch the lively shipyard action take place at this busy port, see local fishermen at work and dine at casual waterfront restaurants.

Angra dos Reis Port (Porto Angra dos Reis) is the focal point of the city’s shipyard and maritime trading activities. It features a dock for cargo ships, a fishing marina and a public square. Angra dos Reis Port is a major Brazilian importer of coal and wood and an exporter of coffee, which comes from the Vale do Paraiba region, and steel.

Access to the main quay is for employees only but you can still observe dockers and officers as they arrive and depart. Alternatively, walk along the waterfront road, from where you can enjoy views out along the quay. Spot large freight ships and the port’s warehouses. The industrial landscape is a stark contrast to the emerald-green waters and lush rainforests that characterize the city’s surrounding countryside.

On the east side of the main quay is the fishing wharf. Brightly colored trawlers squeeze up against each other along the wooden jetties. Enjoy the opportunity to watch as anglers haul huge nets of fish out of the boats and then sort them into containers full of ice. Snap a souvenir photograph with the trawlers set against the backdrop of verdant mountains and a bright blue sky.

Witness the energetic activity of Praça do Porto. Children can have fun on the swings and slides of the small playground. Buy food and drink at snack bars and restaurants. Sample a tapioca sandwich, plates of fresh squid and sushi. Eat in the square or at an outdoor terrace with sea views.

Angra dos Reis Port is a short walk from the city center and about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) west of the main bus terminal. Taxis are available from the terminal. From the port it’s easy to reach other city attractions, including Angra dos Reis City Hall and the Fish Market. Also within the port area is the tourist ferry terminal, Cais Turistico de Santa Luzia, from where boats depart for islands such as Ilha Grande and Ilha Gipoia.
