This beautiful island offers unspoilt nature, centuries of history and family-friendly attractions. It's the perfect place to recharge your batteries.

Ameland's natural beauty is a sight for sore eyes. Take a walk with the family, visit the island's 55 metre high lighthouse or spend a relaxing day at the beach. You can also combine your visit to the great outdoors with some culture. The island boasts a number of interesting museums.

Due to the lack of historical finds, little is known about the island until the 14th century. What we do know is that the village of Hollum is one of the oldest settlements. The oldest house on the island was built here in 1516.

Juttersmuseum Swartwoude, which shows how farmers once lived, is a good place to learn more about the history of Ameland. A shelling excursion is a good way to take in the beautiful scenery and enjoy a day with the kids. The Natuurcentrum is also worth a visit. Here you will learn more about the  island's flora and varied aquatic life.
In June, July and August you can take a day trip to Terschelling or Schiermonnikoog. If you're visiting the island in autumn, you may be in time for Kunstmaand Ameland, an annual exhibition of international art that takes place across the island throughout the month of November.

Cars are allowed everywhere on the island except in the centre of Hollum and Nes. The island is also easy to explore on foot or by bicycle and there's a regular bus service to and from the ferry and between the island's villages.

Ameland is reached by ferry from Holwerd, a village in North-Friesland. The crossing takes about 45 minutes and you can take your car at a surcharge. If you plan to travel to Ameland by public transport, take the bus to Holwerd from Leeuwarden.

Whether you're taking a break with the kids or enjoying a romantic weekend with your partner, Ameland is the perfect base for a most enjoyable time. There's a reason why the island is called 'the pearl of the Wadden Sea'!
