Aabenraa is a charming, scenic southern town with a wealth of museums and plenty to see and do. A trip to Aabenraa is ideal for the whole family.

Aabenraa is a harbour town on the banks of Aabenraa Fjord. It has around 16,000residents, meaning you are not taking a city break when you come here. On the other hand, this is the ideal location for getting out into the Danish countryside. The town also has plenty of small specialist shops, interesting museums and friendly locals.

Aabenraa is close to leafy woods and a wonderful fjord, ideal for family hiking and for a picnic under the trees. On sunny days, you can swim in the fjord. Explore the town’s maritime history at the Aabenraa Museum, which has exhibits on the bustling port and objects brought home from foreign climes.

Another museum worth a visit is Brundlund Slot art museum, dating from the 16th century, located right in the centre of town. Visit the castle to see its art collection from the region. The castle is surrounded by a moat and has dungeons and will appeal to both children and adults alike. It also has a café where you can take a break with a coffee or an ice cream.

You can also visit Jacob Michelsen’s Gård, dating back to 1535, which not only gives a glimpse into life on a Danish farm in days gone by, it also arranges weekends with baking activities in the old oven house from 1876–a quaint and educational experience. And if you want to get a bit more serious about Denmark’s history, Frøslevlejrens Museum is nearby, with exhibits from WWII, when the German Gestapo used the camp to imprison resistance fighters.

But it’s the local scenery that most people come here for, with long coastal stretches, beaches, woodland and rolling countryside. A network of footpaths crisscrosses the area for visitors to enjoy the fresh air and learn more about nature in the area.

As an example, there are four ‘clover’ paths of different lengths and themes. All four of these paths start at Storetorv. Plan the perfect holiday in Aabenraa, with infinite possibilities of things to do and see.
