Learn more about Tongariro National Park
Dramatic volcanic landscapes and emerald lakes make the Tongariro Alpine Crossing one of the world's most spectacular day hikes. Rangers can recommend shorter trails if you're not up for the full crossing, or point you toward Whakapapa Village's winter ski slopes.

Top Tongariro National Park Hotel Reviews
Mountain Heights Lodge
10/10 Excellent
"Very nice place to stay we really enjoyed our time there"
Snowhaven
8/10 Good
"Good location, there is a drying room which is essential if you are riding on a ski resort."
The Park Hotel Ruapehu
10/10 Excellent
"Reasonable price."
Pipers Lodge
8/10 Good
"The place was busy due to the ski season and many seasonal workers stayed there, so night time could be quite noisy. There is also a kitchen on site offering simple buffet breakfast at a cheap price and other dining options for lunch/dinner. The staff members were very friendly and helpful; there were complimentary coffee and tea at the common area 24/7, a TV and a large lounge to chill at. The kitchen was quite packed but they have air fryers which could be very useful. The room we stayed in is central-heated. Close to National Park and Whakapapa, this place is good for a short stay."
