Sharjah
Sharjah showcases its art galleries and museums, markets, beaches and family entertainment with pride. Sharjah is the third largest of the seven emirates in the United Arab Emirates and a former UNESCO Arab Capital of Culture. It’s also the only emirate to have a coastline on both the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
Start your visit in the city of Sharjah, home to more than 20 museums, heritage buildings and a historic old town that lends itself to exploring on foot. Visit the Al Hisn Fort, built in 1820 and considered a masterpiece of Arab architecture. Learn about local lifestyles, traditions and celebrations at the Sharjah Heritage Museum. Spot over 300 works of art by Arab artists at the Sharjah Art Museum.
Visit Sharjah city’s malls and bustling markets. Shop for handicrafts, carpets and perfumes at Souk Al-Arsah, one of the oldest markets in the U.A.E. Find over 600 stores at the Blue Souq or visit the Mega Mall, home to luxury brands and an indoor theme park.
Explore bars, restaurants, galleries and entertainment at the waterfront Al Qasba complex. Ride the Eye of the Emirates, a 195-foot-tall (60-meter) Ferris wheel. Watch laser, light and water shows or play mini golf at the Al Majaz Waterfront. Stroll along palm tree-fringed beaches, take a swim in the Persian Gulf or join a boat tour along the emirate’s west coast.
Head across the Al Hajar Mountains to Sharjah’s east coast beach suburbs. Rent a kayak and spot a variety of birdlife while paddling around a mangrove forest at Khor Kalba. Go snorkeling and scuba diving in the perfect waters of Khor Fakkan.
Always respect local laws and dress appropriately when visiting Sharjah’s attractions. Ask at your accommodation if you are unsure. Also, Sharjah is a “dry” emirate, which means alcohol is almost nonexistent.
Sharjah has its own international airport, although many people fly to Dubai and then use buses, taxis or rental cars to travel to their destinations.
