Georgetown

Explore the historic downtown, tee off at the world-class golf course and spelunk in the ancient cavern during a visit to this picturesque Texas town.

Georgetown, located in central Texas, might be the county seat, but it thrives on small-town appeal and historic charm.

The downtown offers small boutiques, galleries and restaurants clustered around the historic square. Every April, the square plays host to the Red Poppy Festival, an event with live music, car shows and performances that will delight every member of the family. The historic district has Victorian-era buildings that have been immaculately preserved to make a walk down Main Street feel like a step back in time.

Southwestern University, Texas’s oldest higher-learning institution, is situated on a 700-acre (280-hectare) campus filled with historic buildings and a manicured green, making it the perfect place for a walk or a picnic. Watch a Pirates game or enjoy a performance at the Sarofim School of Fine Arts, all within easy walking distance of the historic district.

Just 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) south of downtown is Inner Space Cavern, a massive karst cave that gives visitors a look into the enchanting underworld of Georgetown. It was first discovered in 1963 during the construction of Interstate 35. Today, its remarkable formations can be explored by guided tours or spelunking expeditions. This regional landmark is open daily.

Get some relief from the region’s hot summers at Russell Park, where you can enjoy a swim in Georgetown lake and a picnic lunch afterward. Jet skiers, boaters and fishermen flock to the lake to enjoy the clean waters. Camp at one of the four parks located on the waterfront.

Spend tee time at Cowan Creek Golf Club, one of Georgetown’s most picturesque courses. The rolling landscape presents a welcome challenge for expert golfers, while beginners can use the open and expansive layout to brush up on their skills.

Georgetown is located 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Austin. It’s easiest to get around the city by car. The hot summers are balanced by mild winters, making the town a favored retirement destination. Sun City Texas, an age-restricted development, accounts for nearly one-third of the Georgetown population.
