Melbourne Cricket Ground

Melbourne Cricket Ground

Australia’s premier stadium is a symbol of Melbourne’s sporting heritage, drawing thousands of fans to cricket, football, rugby and soccer matches and events.

Find out where sports history is made when you visit the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), known affectionately as “the G” to its regular revelers. The MCG has provided the setting for some of the most momentous events in Melbourne’s long and rich sporting heritage. Check out a match or a sports event at the immense stadium and explore the National Sports Museum. Take a tour and enjoy the views from one of the G’s bars and cafés.

As you walk through Yarra Park, you’ll see the enormous stadium walls and towering lights of the MCG looming ahead. The tall light towers can be seen from all over the city. If you’re here to see a sports match, the attendees and ushers will help you find your seat. Take your place in the grandstands and look down on the grassed cricket ground. The stadium has seating for approximately 95,000 people, with additional standing room for 5,000 more. You might attend one of the international or interstate clashes and watch cricket, Australian Rules Football, rugby union or rugby league teams go head to head. The MCG has also hosted FIFA World Cup soccer qualifiers and events for the Olympic and Commonwealth games held in Melbourne.

Check out the National Sports Museum to learn about the momentous events that have occurred on Melbourne’s most hallowed sports turf. Within the museum, you’ll also find the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the Australian Racing Museum and the Melbourne Cricket Club Museum.

Take a guided tour of the MCG and go behind the scenes of Australia’s most famous stadium. Visit the Melbourne Cricket Club’s Long Room and 19th-century library and take a stroll on the turf. See the different rooms for players, coaches and the media. Finally, you’ll be taken to the towering City Terrace, which has unbeatable views of Melbourne’s skyline.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground is located in East Melbourne within easy walking distance of the city center. You can also reach the stadium by train or tram. Most events are ticketed, so go online or visit the box office to secure your place. Tours and museum visits have an admission charge, which can be combined for a discount.
