What you can expect

Your guided Yala Village Tour begins with a convenient pickup from your accommodation, followed by a visit to one of the most historically significant sites in the region—the Yatala Tissa Stupa. Built over 2,300 years ago by King Mahanaga to commemorate the birth of his son, Yatala Tissa, this ancient stupa is a remarkable symbol of Sri Lanka’s early Buddhist heritage. You will also explore the adjoining Buddhist Museum, where centuries-old artifacts and relics offer a deeper understanding of the region's spiritual history.

Next, we visit a small-scale family-run pottery workshop, where you can witness traditional pottery-making techniques passed down through generations. You'll see skilled artisans shape clay into beautiful pieces and even get the chance to create your own pottery item—a hands-on experience that connects you directly to local craftsmanship and culture.

We then continue to Debarawewa Lake, a tranquil body of water surrounded by lush paddy fields, offering beautiful scenic views. Here, you will enjoy a bird watching session, with opportunities to spot a wide variety of local and migratory birds in their natural habitat. As we travel through the area, you’ll also learn about the interconnected lake system—five major lakes linked by canals that collect rainwater and support the village’s traditional farming practices.

The next stop is a natural bat colony, where you’ll observe thousands of bats roosting in their natural environment—a unique and fascinating sight for wildlife lovers.

Finally, we head to the peaceful Tissa Lake to watch the sunset. As the sky transforms with vibrant colors reflected on the still waters, this serene moment brings the tour to a beautiful and calming end.

Throughout the tour, your local guide will share stories, historical facts, and cultural insights, helping you experience the true essence of village life in southern Sri Lanka. This tour is ideal for travelers seeking an authentic, off-the-beaten-path adventure rich in nature, history, and local interaction
