What you can expect
Embark on a profound and reflective journey from central Vienna through the scenic landscapes of Lower Austria to the Mauthausen Memorial, one of the most powerful sites of remembrance in Europe.
During the two-hour drive, your expert guide will provide a compelling overview of Austria’s history under the Nazi regime and the role of Mauthausen Concentration Camp, one of the largest labor camp complexes in the Third Reich. From 1938 to 1945, approximately 190,000 people from across Europe were imprisoned here, and at least 90,000 of them perished.
Upon arrival, join a live-guided tour in English through the preserved historic site. Follow the path of former prisoners through significant locations such as the roll call area, the prisoners’ barracks, the infamous Stairs of Death, and the memorial park located on the grounds of the former SS camp. This tour offers more than just historical facts—it invites critical engagement with the perspectives of both perpetrators and bystanders during the Nazi era.
For non-English speakers, audio guides and site maps are available in 12 major languages for a self-guided experience. Refreshments and light meals are available at the on-site Bistrot.
After the guided portion, take your time to explore the Mauthausen Museum, including the moving Room of Names, and the quarry where many prisoners were forced into brutal labor.
In the early afternoon, the tour departs Mauthausen and returns to Vienna, concluding at the original meeting point.
