In Utsjoki, there are more reindeer than people. On these lands, the Sámi reindeer herders herd their freely grazing reindeer.
During March and April, also guests have the possibility to join our reindeer herding work on the fells. This is the time of the year when we provide our reindeer extra food to help them survive through the long winter. We drive to the fells with snowmobiles, with guests traveling in a sled pulled by guide´s snowmobile and reindeer herders pull big hay sleds with their snowmobiles.
On this program, you are participating in a real working day of Sámi reindeer herding. If you wish, you can also help feeding our reindeer from the big hay sleds.
During the tour, you get to see the magnificent fell view and wildlife of Paistunturi wilderness area, listen to stories about life in the Arctic and reindeer herding and see wild reindeer in their natural habitat in the wilderness. Hot drinks and small snacks are included in the tour.
The tour is usually about 3 hours, depending on the location of our herd. We can pick you up within 10 km from Utsjoki village, or you can arrive directly at our storage at 10 AM. We always provide extra winter gear and helmets for the tour. From our storage, guests travel in a sled pulled by guide´s snowmobile to the fells. We will spend about 2-3 hours in the wilderness, and then return to our storage. Guide will drop you off back at your accommodation if needed.
