Overview

  • Toulouse is la ville rose, a city built in warm pink brick that shifts from terracotta at midday to rose-gold by late afternoon. Behind that soft glow sits a harder history: Europe's great Romanesque basilica, a Gothic “palm tree” vault over the tomb of Thomas Aquinas, merchant palaces raised on a monopoly in blue dye, and a bridge that outlasted every flood.

The route runs from the Basilique Saint-Sernin through Place du Capitole and the Couvent des Jacobins down to the Garonne and the Pont Neuf, then on to the Hotel d'Assezat, the Dalbade, Saint-Etienne Cathedral and the cafes of Place Saint-Georges.

    • Everything runs from your smartphone: no app to download, no physical guide
    • A short audio story and an interactive quiz at each of the 9 stops
    • A clear map and simple directions between locations
    • Start any time, pause whenever you like, and walk at your own pace

Activity itinerary

Basilica of St. Sernin (Pass by)

The starting point of the tour. Your audio guide introduces Europe's great Romanesque pilgrimage church, its five-tiered bell tower and its role on the road to Santiago, followed by a short quiz. You view the exterior from the square.

Place du Capitole (Pass by)

The pink-brick heart of Toulouse. Your audio guide covers the long Capitole facade, the Occitan cross set into the paving and the square's role in city life, with a quiz to finish.

Couvent des Jacobins (Pass by)

The Dominican mother church, famous for the fan vault known as the palm tree and for holding the tomb of Thomas Aquinas. Your audio guide explains both from outside, followed by a quiz.

Notre Dame de la Daurade (Pass by)

The riverside square and its basilica, home to the Black Madonna venerated by generations of Toulousains. Your audio guide tells the story of the site and the Garonne quays, with a quiz.

Pont Neuf (Pass by)

The oldest bridge in Toulouse, built in brick and stone across the Garonne and designed to survive the river's floods. Your audio guide explains its construction and the view back over la ville rose, with a quiz.

Georges Bemberg’s Foundation — Hotel of Assézat (Pass by)

Toulouse's finest Renaissance palace, built by a merchant who made his fortune in pastel, the blue dye that funded the city's golden age. Your audio guide explains the courtyard facade and the pastel trade, with a quiz.

Eglise Notre Dame de La Dalbade (Pass by)

The White Church, built in red brick, with a colourful ceramic tympanum over its doorway. Your audio guide covers the facade and the collapse of its record-breaking spire in 1926, with a quiz.

Cathedrale St-Etienne (Pass by)

The cathedral that never matched up: an older nave and a later, taller choir set at different angles, left unfinished when the money ran out. Your audio guide explains the mismatch, with a quiz.

Place Saint-Georges (Pass by)

The final stop, and the city's favourite cafe square today. Your audio guide closes the tour with the square's earlier, darker history and a last quiz before you settle in for a drink.
