What you can expect

  • Begin your tour by walking through the Shukubacho shopping street and passing the Senjumotonihonkawa Shrine. Arrive at Anyoin Temple to view the relocated roof of a bathhouse that operated for 92 years.

After it closed, this roof was relocated to the grounds of Anyoin Temple—a physical reminder of a lost public space. Then, enter an active bathhouse to experience the ritual yourself.

Learn proper bathing etiquette before you go. The person at the ticket window becomes the final storyteller of that day—the last person to tell you about public bathing in this part of Tokyo.
