What you can expect
In recognition of South Africa’s journey to democracy, the Witwatersrand National Botanical Garden was renamed Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, honoring the legendary anti-apartheid leader. The Great Trek is a 3.5 km circular hike through this iconic botanical garden. Starting at the entrance, you’ll explore diverse plant life, including cycads, desert plants, and vibrant wildflower areas, and visit landmarks such as the Walter Sisulu statue and the tranquil Witpoortjie Waterfall.
Along the way, you’ll discover the People’s Garden, celebrating local heritage, and gain insights into South Africa’s rich biodiversity and history. Inspired by the adventurous spirit of the Voortrekkers, this journey connects nature, culture, and historical storytelling in one immersive hike.
After a brief meet-and-greet, the hike will take approximately 2–3 hours. While the park is wheelchair accessible, some uneven terrain may make portions challenging. Comfortable footwear, water, and a sense of adventure are recommended. Participants are responsible for their own safety and should follow their guide’s instructions.
