Overview

  • Omaha Beach was one of D-Day's deadliest beaches. On this self-guided audio tour, you'll follow the fighting from the German defenses that made it so lethal to the Americans who fought their way ashore.

    At Colleville-sur-Mer, enter WN62, one of Omaha's largest German strongpoints, exploring bunkers and mortar posts used by fewer than 35 men to rake the beach with crossfire.

    Descend to the beach where F Company's 180 men crossed alone under fire for 12 minutes. Hear how Private Pinder hauled radios ashore despite his wounds, and how Lieutenant Spalding's men found the one gap in the minefield. The tour ends at WN61, where a Sherman tank silenced the 88mm gun that devastated the landings.

    You'll also see an intact underground shelter finished weeks before D-Day, and hear of Lieutenant Monteith's posthumous Medal of Honor and Corporal Hein Severloh, the “Butcher of Omaha Beach”—leaving with a clear picture of why Omaha was so costly, and its capture so remarkable.
