What you can expect
Begin your tour with a drive up to the prominent peak of Mount Entoto, which served as Menelik II’s capital before the founding of Addis Ababa. From this vantage point, enjoy one of the best panoramic views of the city.
Following this, walk for approximately 20-25 minutes to Entoto Church and the surrounding village, where you will have the opportunity to experience traditional Ethiopian bread baking (Injera).
On the way back, stop at Shiro Meda to explore traditional Ethiopian clothing and textiles. Then, visit the Bata Mariam Mausoleum, where several Ethiopian royals, including Emperor Menelik II, are buried. The crypt features marble tombs and an original painting by Michelangelo, making it a remarkable site.
Next, explore the National Museum of Ethiopia’s extensive collection, including the famous fossil of Lucy, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in Sub-Saharan Africa. The museum also displays artifacts, Ethiopian artwork, traditional weapons, jewelry, clothing, and musical instruments.
Experience local commerce by visiting Shiromeda Market and Kechene Medehaniyalem, renowned for their pottery products and local crafts. Then, head to the Ethnological Museum, located on the campus of Addis Ababa University in the former palace of Haile Selassie. This museum showcases Ethiopia’s diverse ethnic groups through exhibits of artifacts, musical instruments, and visual arts.
Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian meal at a cultural restaurant in Piazza. If interested, include a visit to Tomoca Coffee for a taste of Ethiopia’s renowned coffee. Finally, visit notable landmarks such as the Lion of Judah statue, Winston Churchill Street, Legehare Train Station, the Tiglachin (Our Struggle) Monument, and Tewodros Square, named after Emperor Tewodros II.
