It begins with a ceremony at the four cardinal points and the lighting of the “fire eagle,” during which red-hot volcanic stones—known as “abuelitas”—are placed in the center of the temazcal. Combined with sacred herbs, songs, and prayers, the steam cleanses the body, calms the mind, and creates a space for deep introspection.
