What you can expect

After pickup the first short stop is just outside Tbilisi near a local market area, where you can take a brief break and optionally buy snacks, water, or coffee before continuing the journey. Drive heading toward the east-southeast of Georgia, where the landscape quickly changes from urban surroundings into open steppe and semi-desert terrain.

The journey continues through wide open landscapes with several scenic photo stops along the way, allowing you to capture the dramatic views of hills, valleys, and desert-like formations.

After approximately one hour, you will reach a viewpoint overlooking the small settlement of Udabno, whose name means “desert.” This remote village is home to eco-migrant communities living in this unique semi-arid environment, offering a rare insight into life in this isolated region.

You will also stop near a salt lake, where the bright, reflective surface contrasts beautifully with the surrounding dry landscape, creating excellent photography opportunities.

As you approach the highlight area, you will arrive at the famous Rainbow Hills, known for their colorful layered formations created by natural minerals. This surreal landscape offers one of the most unique views in Georgia.

Here, you will enjoy a short guided hike through the colorful hills, with gentle to moderate uphill sections and uneven terrain. The hike is suitable for travelers with average fitness and includes several stops for rest, photography, and enjoying the scenery.

Also there is the historic David Gareja Monastery Complex, carved into the rocky cliffs and one of Georgia’s most important spiritual sites. From here, you will take a short hike up the hill to reach a cave chapel, where a natural spring known as “David’s Tears” flows. According to tradition, this holy water is associated with the monastery’s history and spiritual heritage. The climb offers panoramic views over the desert landscape and surrounding hills.

After exploring the monastery area and enjoying the final viewpoints, you will begin your return journey back to Tbilisi, completing a half-day experience filled with history, dramatic landscapes, and unforgettable natural
