What you can expect

Enjoy a truly special spiritual experience in Harlem, where, for many, Sunday gospel service is an integral part of life. Join a local guide for a tour to see the architecturally impressive rowhouses of Mount Morris Historic District and former homes of some of Harlem's notable residents and institutions. Then, attend a church service to hear the joyful sounds of its gospel choir.

Meet your guide in the heart of Harlem and head into the streets to uncover the area's rich heritage and lasting legacy. Stroll down charming tree-lined streets to see the historic buildings once home to notables such as Broadway legend Richard Rodgers and influential African-American like James Van der Zee, poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, and basketball legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Then, travel down 125th Street to spot Speakers' Corner, where political activists like Marcus Garvey, the Black Muslims, and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. delivered powerful orations in the 1920s through the 60s.

For the second part of your tour, your guide leads you to one of the neighborhood's long-standing churches. Join a local congregation filled with beautifully dressed women wearing impressive hats—an iconic scene documented in countless films and photographs.

Step inside the holy place and become a part of the congregation. As you listen to the gospel choir deliver an inspirational and uplifting performance, you can feel the sense of unity they bring, not just to the church but to the entire neighborhood. Before the service comes to an end, contribute a donation to the offering plate to help the church fulfill its mission in community service.

If this tour is completely booked and there is no availability, please consider Hallelujah Gospel Praise worship on Wednesday at 5:30 pm at a historic Black church. An hour and 15 minutes of praise, hand clapping energy of gospel.
