What you can expect

  • Ålesund is more than just a beautiful seaside town. If you look more closely, you will discover traces everywhere of how the city and Norway have changed over time.

    In a small group, we will explore Ålesund, from the historic harbor to the famous Art Nouveau façades. It's not just about what we see, but also about why the city looks the way it does today and what stories lie behind it.

    The walking tour starts at the Fisherman's Boy monument right by the water. We will follow Ålesund's development into a major center of the salt cod trade and learn how fishing and trade brought prosperity to the city. Along the way, we will also talk about major infrastructure projects, Norway's oil and gas wealth, and how this wealth has changed the country and its society.

    After a short break for coffee or ice cream, we will continue with the Art Nouveau style for which Ålesund is known today. The city fire of 1904 destroyed almost the entire city center. On Kongens gate, you will learn why Art Nouveau in Ålesund often appears much more understated and minimalist compared to other European Art Nouveau cities.

    There is much to discover on these façades: Why are there flowers, animals and faces? What is the meaning of these symbols? Together, we will discover many small details that are easy to miss when walking by, and we will learn about the stories and ideas behind them.

    But Ålesund is more than just its architecture. We will also talk about fishermen and merchants, war and reconstruction, economic change, and how Norway has changed up to the present day.

    The small group size leaves plenty of time for questions, discussions and personal recommendations. At the end, you will receive a digital brochure with further tips for restaurants, cafés, shops and things to do in Ålesund.
