Imagine standing at the foot of the biggest glacier in Europe with a chance to explore an ever changing ice cave with a skilled and certified glacier guide who will ensure your safety as you take in the moment.
Natural ice caves start to form in when the glacier water melts and the water needs an escape way. In the winter the caves take a better shape as the glacier freezes again. In Iceland most of the ice caves are not a permanent feature as the weather varies notably during seasons. As the weather warms up, the ice caves can melt and cause the cave to collapse. That is why, every winter, we have the privilege of finding new caves and exploring them knowing that they might be different tomorrow and it is almost certain that they won’t be here next winter.
The stunning blue colors which are a rare sight in ice caves come from the sun shining through the ice. The crystal ice cave is formed at the roots of the glacier where the layer of ice is thinner, allowing for the sunlight to create these stunning blue colors in the ice.
This experience is one that you are not likely to forget anytime soon. Your adventure starts at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where we pick you up and drive to the roots of the glacier. After arriving at the location the guide will provide you with the crampons and helmet so that you will be able to enjoy the ice cave safely. You will have about 45 minutes to explore the cave and take as many pictures as you like.
