Know before you book

  • No admission for children under the age of 4!
  • Due to the year-round low temperatures of 7 to 10 Celsius (45 to 50 Fahrenheit) and the sometimes uneven ground, warm clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended! We will provide you with protective clothing on site.
  • Upon arrival at the salt mines, you will be greeted directly by a guide who will lead you to the entrance.
  • Please do not leave any personal belongings on the bus, as the return transportation may take place in a different bus.

What you can expect

Salt Mine Adventure: A Journey Through History

Join us for an unforgettable experience! Meet us at 9:00 AM at Mirabellplatz 2, in the heart of Salzburg. At 9:15 AM, board our comfortable shuttle for a scenic ride to the Hallein Salt Mines.Once you arrive, a guide will take you straight to the entrance. Your ticket includes a guided tour starting at 10:10 AM. Explore ancient tunnels, ride a historic mine train, slide down fun wooden miner's slides, and even float on an underground lake.

The mine stays cool at 50F (10C), so dress warmly. We’ll provide you with a traditional white miner’s suit to keep you comfortable and clean. After the tour, visit the Salzwelten shop for unique salt-themed souvenirs.We’ll depart at 12:15 PM and return to Mirabellplatz by 1:00 PM, leaving you with unforgettable memories of this epic journey.

Salt has shaped civilizations for millions of years. Around 250 million years ago, a massive salt lake covered what’s now Austria and Germany. As water evaporated, salt deposits formed and were pushed up into the Alps.

Humans discovered salt’s power early on, using it for preservation by 4,000 BC. By the 6th century BC, the Celts in Dürrnberg were mining salt, establishing a thriving community. In the Middle Ages, Salzburg’s Prince-Archbishops recognized salt as a major source of wealth, funding the city's grand architecture. Today, you can explore this rich history at Salzwelten Salzburg, home to the world’s oldest visitor mine.
