Travel across Sicily to discover Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano, with free time at Rifugio Sapienza to explore the area independently and optionally ascend the volcano by cable car and 4x4 vehicle.
OPTION 1: Etna & Taormina Full-Day Tour
This experience lasts approximately 12 hours and includes transportation from Palermo to Mount Etna and Taormina.
After a long but scenic drive across Sicily, reach Rifugio Sapienza at approximately 1,800 meters above sea level on Mount Etna. Enjoy around 2.5 hours of free time to explore the volcanic area independently.
You may optionally purchase the ascent experience up to approximately 2,800 meters using the cable car and 4x4 vehicles operated by the official Etna providers. The approximate cost is €85 per person, to be paid on site. Availability depends on weather and volcanic conditions.
After the Etna stop, continue to Taormina, one of Sicily’s most famous hilltop towns. Enjoy free time to explore independently at your own pace. You may visit the Greek-Roman Theater, stroll through Corso Umberto, shop in local boutiques, or admire the spectacular coastal views.
Please note: Taormina is not a guided visit. No local guide or entrance tickets are included.
OPTION 2: Mount Etna Only from Palermo
This option is designed for travelers who prefer to spend more time on Mount Etna without visiting Taormina.
The experience includes round-trip transportation from Palermo (approximately 3.5 hours each way) and the assistance of a tour escort responsible for coordinating timings and supervising the excursion logistics.
Upon arrival at Rifugio Sapienza, enjoy approximately 3.5 to 4 hours of free time, allowing sufficient time for travelers who wish to purchase the optional ascent to higher altitudes, even during periods with long waiting lines.
The optional ascent to approximately 2,800 meters by cable car and 4x4 vehicle is available at an additional cost of approximately €85 per person, payable on site.
The total duration of the Mount Etna Only experience is approximately 11 hours.
