What you can expect
Shodō Meets Tea is a unique Japanese cultural experience that brings together calligraphy and tea in a calm, focused, and deeply personal ritual.
In Japan, shodō (calligraphy) is more than writing beautiful characters.
Each stroke is final—there is no sketch, no erasing. This act of committing a single character to paper requires presence, intention, and quiet concentration, and has long been practiced as a way to turn the mind inward.
In this experience, shodō is paired with tea to create something entirely original.
You will begin by slowing down with freshly prepared tea, allowing its aroma and warmth to settle your mind. As your breathing becomes calm and focused, you will take the brush in hand. Instead of traditional ink, you will write using tea leaves. Their natural fibers create subtle textures and organic movement, making each work expressive and unique—even for first-time participants.
Guided step by step, you will learn the fundamentals of Japanese calligraphy, including how to hold the brush and the essential techniques of hane (flick), harai (sweep), and tome (stop). More importantly, you will choose a character that holds meaning for you and commit it to paper in a single, intentional moment.
This is not a technical calligraphy class, and no prior experience is required.
The focus is not on perfection, but on presence—on creating a moment of clarity through tea, silence, and writing.
The experience lasts approximately 90 minutes and is designed for small groups to ensure a quiet, personal, and immersive atmosphere. You will leave with your finished calligraphy artwork and a deeper understanding of a uniquely Japanese way of reflection and expression.
This experience is ideal for travelers seeking something more meaningful than sightseeing—a calm, creative ritual that stays with you long after it ends.
