Atomic Bomb Dome

The Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome) is one of the world’s most poignant reminders of the tragic consequences of nuclear warfare and a powerful symbol of everlasting peace. Originally built in 1915 as an industrial promotion hall, the structure unexpectedly survived the blast of the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, directly underneath the epicenter. Preserved in the exact state as it was immediately after the bombing, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stands today to convey the horrors of war while embodying humanity’s hope for a peaceful, nuclear-free world. Located in the heart of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, it is an essential, unforgettable stop for every traveler visiting Japan.

Memorial Tower to the Mobilized Students

Located near the Atomic Bomb Dome within Peace Memorial Park, this 12-meter-tall tower is dedicated to the more than 10,000 students who were killed by the atomic bombing or war efforts across Japan. During World War II, middle and high school students were mobilized to work in factories and clear buildings for firebreaks. On August 6, 1945, over 6,000 young students lost their lives in Hiroshima while working on the front lines of the city's defenses. Decorated with thousands of colorful paper cranes (orizuru), the monument serves as a poignant reminder of the innocent young lives cut short and a powerful plea for peace for future generations.

Ground Zero

Located just a short walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome, this subtle plaque marks the exact hypocenter (Ground Zero) where the atomic bomb exploded in mid-air on August 6, 1945, at an altitude of approximately 600 meters. At the time, the site was occupied by Shima Hospital, which was completely destroyed along with the loss of all staff and patients inside. Today, a calm medical clinic stands on the same spot, bearing a memorial monument that silently tells the story of that tragic moment. Rest House of Hiroshima Peace Park

Located near Motoyasu Bridge in Peace Memorial Park, the Rest House is one of the very few surviving A-bombed buildings within the park area. Originally built in 1929 as a modern kimono shop, this reinforced concrete structure survived the blast just 170 meters from the hypocenter. Fully renovated and reopened in 2020, the building now serves as a welcoming hub for visitors. The upper floors feature a cozy rest area, café, and souvenir shop showcasing local Hiroshima products, while the basement preserves the historic space where the building's sole survivor managed to escape. It is a unique stop where travelers can learn about the history of the former vibrant Nakajima district while relaxing.

Children's Peace Monument

Located in the center of Peace Memorial Park, the Children’s Peace Monument was built to commemorate Sadako Sasaki and the thousands of children who died as a result of the atomic bombing. Sadako was exposed to radiation at age two and later developed leukemia. Believing in an old Japanese legend that folding 1,000 paper cranes would grant a wish for health, she folded them untiringly until her passing. To this day, millions of colorful paper cranes from schoolchildren and people around the world arrive here annually, filling the surrounding booths with vibrant colors. Topped with a bronze statue of a young girl holding a golden crane high above her head, this monument is an exceptionally moving stop that highlights the tragic impact of war on innocent youth and the enduring message of global hope.

Peace Flame

Located on the central axis of Peace Memorial Park between the Cenotaph and the Atomic Bomb Dome, the Flame of Peace has been burning continuously since it was lit in 1964. Designed to resemble two hands joined together with palms turned toward the sky, the pedestal holds a flame created from fires collected from religious institutions and industrial plants across Japan, as well as the historic flame of Miyajima's Mount Misen. This iconic flame carries a powerful promise: it will burn continuously until all nuclear weapons on Earth are completely abolished. Looking through the arch of the Cenotaph toward the Atomic Bomb Dome with the flame centered inside creates one of the most memorable and photogenic vistas in the park, symbolizing Hiroshima's ultimate goal of global nuclear disarmament.

The Cenotaph

Officially named the Memorial Monument for Hiroshima, City of Peace, this iconic arch-shaped monument stands at the heart of Peace Memorial Park. Designed by renowned architect Kenzo Tange, the concrete structure resembles an ancient Japanese saddle-shaped clay roof (haniwa), built to shelter the souls of the atomic bomb victims from rain and wind. Underneath the arch lies a stone chest containing the registry of all known A-bomb victims, regardless of nationality, continuously updated each year. Engraved on the front is the famous message: "Let all the souls here rest in peace, for we shall not repeat the evil." Aligned perfectly with the Flame of Peace and the Atomic Bomb Dome, it is the central site where visitors from around the world pause to pay their respects.

Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims

Located underground next to the Cenotaph in Peace Memorial Park, this national memorial hall was established by the Japanese government to mourn all victims of the atomic bombing and pray for lasting peace. Designed by architect Kenzo Tange, the entrance leads visitors down a gentle spiral slope into a serene, solemn space away from the noise of the city. At its center lies the Hall of Remembrance, offering a 360-degree panorama of Hiroshima as it looked following the bombing, constructed using 140,000 bricks—the estimated number of lives lost by the end of 1945. Visitors can read firsthand memoirs, view photographs, and listen to personal accounts of the victims, providing a deeply human and emotional perspective on the tragedy.
