Visit the Shaolin Temple, located at the northern foot of Shaoshi Mountain in Dengfeng City, Zhengzhou, Henan Province. Built in 495 AD during the Northern Wei Dynasty, the temple was constructed by order of Emperor Xiaowen to house the Indian monk Batuo. Later, Bodhidharma resided there, founding the Chan (Zen) school and establishing Shaolin Temple as the ancestral home of Chan Buddhism.
During the late Sui and early Tang Dynasties, thirteen Shaolin monks rescued the Tang emperor, earning Shaolin Kung Fu royal acclaim. The saying “All martial arts under heaven originated from Shaolin, and Shaolin Kung Fu is the best under heaven” has been passed down to this day, forming a unique culture that integrates Chan and martial arts.
Explore the main monastery, which has seven courtyards, with an imperial plaque inscribed by Emperor Kangxi hanging at the mountain gate. Admire the Ming Dynasty murals in the Thousand Buddha Hall and see the footprints of martial monks practicing their skills.
Visit the Pagoda Forest on the west side, which contains over 240 pagodas dating from the Tang to Qing Dynasties, forming the largest ancient pagoda complex in China, a veritable open-air museum of ancient pagodas. Today, Shaolin Temple is a World Heritage Site and a national 5A-level tourist attraction, not only a Buddhist holy site but also an important symbol of Chinese martial arts culture on the world stage.
