The two bridges are entirely differ - ent in shape : the surface of one bridge is horizontal , whereas that of the other is vertical , but are connected with each other . A return visit to Zhouzhuang always turns up something interesting that was missed on previous visits . Today Zhouzhuang is an extremely successful tourism resource .

The most delightful attractions in the village is riding on one of the gondola - style boats that ply the canals crisscrossing the village and linking it to the busy network of lakes and rivers , the life blood of the region . We can tour the town by boat , serenaded by women gondoliers as they pole along with a single rear - mounted oar that works back and forth in a unique swaying motion . The boat affords a great vantage point from which people may look into the rickety homes that hang over the waterways , with stone steps running into the canals where young boys skim stones . The architecture and furnishings reflect the wealth and lifestyle of a prominent Jiangnan family, symbolized by the couplet: “Sedan chair from the inside, boat from home.”
