The origin of the name "Jigokudani" ("Hell Valley") comes from the impression given by the area's bubbling, boiling hot water that's said to look like "hell, where demons live." As a tourist destination, it is beloved by the people of Hokkaido. Jigokudani (meaning "Hell's Valley") does indeed look like hell. Volcanic gases spout from the cracks in the rocks, and the smell of sulfur along with the billowing white smoke and simmering hot springs, are truly impressive.
