What you can expect
São Paulo is one of the most diverse cities in the world, shaped by generations of immigrants—Italians, Japanese, Syrian-Lebanese, and many others—who have contributed to making it the complex, vibrant place it is today. On this walking tour through downtown, we’ll explore how these communities, together with earlier histories like the Tupi presence and the Jesuit mission that founded the city, helped transform São Paulo from a small colonial outpost into the largest financial center in South America.
This experience is always led by me, Giuliano, a professional guide and founder of Concrete Jungles Walking Tours. I also arrived here as a foreigner more than 10 years ago, and over time the historic center became the place I know best and care most about—an open-air living theater where history, architecture, and everyday life constantly overlap. My goal is to help you understand not just what you’re seeing, but how all these layers connect and what they mean for the city today.
We’ll walk through both the “new” center and the historic downtown, visiting key landmarks and buildings while following a clear historical path—from the early indigenous routes and Jesuit foundation, through the rise of coffee wealth and the first skyscrapers in Latin America, to the diverse and dynamic metropolis São Paulo has become. Along the way, you’ll hear stories and insights that go beyond standard guidebooks, grounded in both research and lived experience.
• Visit many of São Paulo’s most important historic buildings and monuments, including the Cathedral
• Understand the role of different immigrant communities in shaping the city
• Hear stories and perspectives you won’t find in traditional tour guides
• Small group experience with a maximum of 10 participants
You can watch me on a National Geographic episode about Sao Paulo called:
I Ate 9 Italian Dishes in Brazil | Big Little Italy | National Geographic (I appear starting from minute 3:30)
A few practical tips: São Paulo has unpredictable tropical weather, so it’s always a good idea to bring both sunscreen and an umbrella.
