What you can expect

  • This winter full-day tour from Santiago explores Cajón del Maipo, a mountain valley in the Andes southeast of the city, with three stops: Laguna del Encañado, Casa Chocolate, and Plaza de San José de Maipo. Round-trip transfer and a bilingual guide are included.

    The experience

    Laguna del Encañado: the day begins with a snowshoe hike, using trekking poles, through a U-shaped glacial valley to this historic mountain refuge at 2,600 meters above sea level. Along the trail, binoculars and monoculars are available to observe the Mesón Alto Glacier. The area is home to condors, piuquenes, taguas, and Andean ducks. The hike ends with an outdoor brunch (coffee, hot chocolate, sandwiches, cakes, and juices) surrounded by snow-covered peaks.

    Casa Chocolate: on the way back, stop at this handmade fairytale-style building in San Alfonso, built by artisan Sergio Andrade with bio-construction techniques and natural materials. A snack with hot chocolate, tea, or coffee is included.

    Plaza de San José de Maipo: the tour ends at the main square of Cajón del Maipo's main town, founded in 1792 and declared a Chilean Historic Monument.

    Practical information

    The tour operates during the winter season only. Snowshoeing is subject to snow and weather conditions. Minimum age: 12 years.
