Departure time: 9:30 a.m. (hotel pick-up) in San Cristóbal de las Casas.
Our first stop is the indigenous community of San Juan Chamula, home to the Tzotzil people. This unique town preserves an ancient system of self-governance based on traditional customs and practices. San Juan Chamula is divided into three districts—San Juan Bautista, San Pedro, and San Sebastián—each with its own cemetery marked by large crosses symbolizing the Mother God and Father God.
Here you will visit the Church of San Juan Bautista, a remarkable place where Catholic traditions blend with pre-Hispanic beliefs, creating one of the most striking examples of religious syncretism in the region.
We then continue to Zinacantán, a Tzotzil town whose name means “Place of Bats.” Surrounded by hills, its sacred landscape centers around the Church of San Lorenzo, of colonial origin and renovated in the early 20th century, along with the chapels of Esquipulas and San Sebastián. Most of the local population is Tzotzil, and flower cultivation is one of the main economic activities of the community.
