What you can expect
The Samaria Gorge, located in the White Mountains of Crete, is one of the most famous and breathtaking gorges in Europe. Stretching 16 kilometers, it offers a stunning natural landscape with steep cliffs, dense forests, and a crystal-clear river running through it. The hike begins at Xyloskalo (1,250m altitude) and descends through a spectacular canyon, passing the abandoned village of Samaria, before reaching the exit at Agia Roumeli, a coastal village by the Libyan Sea.
The hike takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, depending on each person’s pace and endurance, as everyone walks individually at their own speed. Throughout the hike, you will be accompanied by an experienced guide, who will ensure your safety and provide useful information about the gorge. The guide will stay at the back of the group, making sure that no one is left behind.
The guide is also responsible for purchasing both the entrance tickets to the gorge and the ferry tickets. A meeting point will be arranged around 16:00 in Agia Roumeli, where the guide will distribute the ferry tickets and ensure that everyone knows which boat to take.
At the end of the hike, you will take the last ferry at 17:30 from Agia Roumeli to Sfakia. From Sfakia, the bus will take you back to Rethymno, with an estimated arrival time at your hotel around 21:00, depending on its location.
Important Information
The excursion starts early in the morning, around 05:30 – 06:00, depending on the location of your hotel.
Participants must wear good sports shoes or hiking shoes, as the terrain is rough and rocky.
The hike is not allowed for pregnant women or individuals with health issues, such as heart conditions, respiratory problems, or knee injuries.
It is recommended to bring some snacks to eat along the way, as well as a bottle of water, which can be refilled from the natural springs inside the gorge.
It is recommended to bring sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun during the hike.
This adventure is a must-do for nature lovers and those seeking an unforgettable experience in Crete!
