Overview

Most visitors to Yucatan never make it to Rio Lagartos.
Those who do usually join a shared group boat with
strangers, a fixed route and no flexibility. We do
things differently.

This is a fully private tour. Your boat, your guide,
your pace. Maximum 6 pax, which means the
captain adjusts the route based on where the flamingos
are feeding that day, not where the schedule says to go.

Rio Lagartos is home to the largest flamingo population
in Mexico, over 40,000 birds, inside a UNESCO-recognized
biosphere reserve that most tourists never explore. We
navigate the mangrove channels, reach the flamingo
feeding grounds, pass the stunning pink waters near
Las Coloradas, stop at a natural Mayan mud bath used
for centuries as a skin treatment, and finish at a
hidden beach accessible only by boat.

Your bilingual local guide grew up in this ecosystem.
That knowledge is not something you find on a shared
tour bus. It is the difference between seeing nature
and understanding it.

Activity itinerary

Rio Lagartos

  • 10m
Your private guide meets you at the Rio Lagartos waterfront malecon. After introductions and a safety briefing, you board your private boat with a maximum of 6 passengers. Your bilingual local guide covers the highlights of the route and what to expect inside one of Mexico's most protected biosphere reserves.

Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve

  • 30m
  • Admission ticket not included
Your boat enters the winding mangrove channels of the Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognized wetland and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in Mexico. Your guide points out herons, pelicans, cormorants, crocodiles and the rich local flora as you navigate the calm waters of this extraordinary natural sanctuary.

Rio Lagartos

  • 20m
You reach the natural feeding and nesting zones of the American flamingo, home to over 40,000 birds and the largest flamingo population in Mexico. Your guide navigates to responsible viewing distance so you can photograph these magnificent pink birds in their natural habitat without disturbing them. This is the moment most visitors call the highlight of their entire trip to Yucatan.

Las Coloradas

  • 20m
Your boat passes the stunning pink and rose-colored waters between Rio Lagartos and Las Coloradas, created by the natural salt concentration and microorganisms in the lagoon. The contrast between the pink water, white salt mountains and blue sky produces one of the most photographed natural landscapes in all of Mexico. Your guide explains the unique geology and ecology behind this extraordinary phenomenon.

Rio Lagartos

  • 20m
Experience one of the most unique wellness traditions in the Yucatan Peninsula. Your guide leads you to a natural mineral-rich mud deposit used for centuries as a skin treatment by the Maya. Apply the natural clay over your body and let it dry under the sun before rinsing off in the lagoon. The mud acts as a natural exfoliant and leaves your skin remarkably soft. This activity is optional and your guide will advise based on your skin type.

Rio Lagartos

  • 30m
Your final stop is a secluded, undeveloped beach accessible only by boat, away from crowds and tourist infrastructure. Take your time to rinse off from the mud bath, swim in calm shallow water and enjoy the unspoiled natural surroundings. This is the hidden beach that most visitors to Yucatan never find. Your boat returns to the Rio Lagartos malecon from here to complete your 2.5-hour private adventure.
