What you can expect
Just 40 minutes from Rio's iconic beaches, Tijuca National Park is the world's largest urban rainforest — 32,000 hectares of lush Atlantic rainforest, ancient caves, crystal-clear waterfalls and extraordinary wildlife rising dramatically above one of the most famous cities on earth. No ordinary green space, this half-day adventure takes you deep into a side of Rio that most visitors never find.
Your expert local guide picks you up from your hotel in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle between 6:50–7:30 AM for morning tours or 1:00–1:30 PM for afternoon tours — and the storytelling starts immediately. Once nearly wiped out by coffee plantations, Tijuca was brought back to life tree by tree in one of history's greatest environmental restoration stories — a living forest that to this day provides fresh water to Rio.
Your first encounter with the forest is unforgettable: the Taunay Waterfall, 35 meters (115 ft) of raw cascading power — the tallest in the park — announces that you have arrived somewhere truly special. From there, jungle trails lead you deeper into the rainforest, where hidden waterfalls like Cachoeira das Almas or Diamantina await depending on the season. Both offer a refreshing dip in pristine mountain water sourced directly from the park's untouched water basins. Locals say it cleanses the soul.
The Caves Trail is where the forest reveals its most dramatic secret. Three extraordinary grottos — Belmiro, Archer, and the Bats Grotto, the largest gneiss cave in Brazil — sit surrounded by towering granite walls that feel pulled from an adventure film.
Keep your eyes wide open throughout: monkeys, toucans, sloths, butterflies and more call this rainforest home (nature decides!). Guests regularly describe wildlife encounters here as closer and more personal than anywhere else in their travels.
The tour draws to a close at the Baronesa waterfall — the perfect spot to refresh with a dip in crystal-clear mountain water after the hike, surrounded by nothing but birdsong and rushing water. Then a scenic 20-minute drive delivers the final reveal: the Chinese Viewpoint, where the dense jungle suddenly opens to sweeping panoramas of Sugarloaf, Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana and Ipanema all at once. From there, we drive you back (around 30 min.) and drop you off exactly where we picked you up.
The hike covers 2 to 4.5 km (1.2 to 2.8 miles) through some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. The main trail runs on natural soil through the heart of the rainforest — safe and accessible, with only short rocky sections, tree roots and gentle boulders adding to the jungle atmosphere. Some sections include mild elevation gain, rewarding you with deeper forest canopy and even more dramatic surroundings. Your guide sets the pace for your group every step of the way — no experience needed, just a sense of adventure and a love for nature.
