What you can expect
Three centuries of food history live inside one three-hour walk through downtown Raleigh, and this route hits five of the best bites in it. It starts at Moore Square, one of only two public squares surviving from the city's 1792 plan, and heads west across the old commercial grid into the Warehouse District, where red brick buildings once held freight, tobacco, and railway offices. The whole walk sits under old oaks, easy on the feet.
Five stops, and no two belong to the same tradition. You'll start with a steamed Char Siu Bao, a Cantonese barbecue pork bun, in a room that's part brewery, part bookshop, part flower stall. Next comes a Lebanese spread built on family recipes carried over a century ago: hummus, baba ghanouj, fattoush, chicken shawarma, and kibbee mikli. Then it's whole-hog barbecue, chopped fine and sharpened with vinegar, the way eastern North Carolina has done it for three centuries. Somewhere along the way, your guide hands you our Secret Dish, which stays secret until it's in front of you. The walk closes with a three-bar chocolate tasting inside a converted railway depot, home to a bean-to-bar chocolate factory.
Your guide lives here, and on this Secret Food Tours route, they'll explain why the barbecue argument between eastern and western North Carolina still gets heated, what East Hargett Street meant to Black Raleigh in the 1920s, and which of these kitchens they take their own family to. Groups are kept small, so there's always room to ask.
You'll leave full, and with a downtown Raleigh you actually know how to walk. Most guests come back to at least one of these five stops before they head home.
