What you can expect
Port Stephens Animal Adventures is fully indoors and open rain or shine. There is no set schedule to follow. You arrive, stay as long as you like, and the animal care team is there throughout the day to answer questions and manage any interactions. It is one of the most complete wildlife experiences in Port Stephens, just 40 minutes north of Newcastle, 1 hour from the Hunter Valley and 2.5 hours north of Sydney.
The facility itself is built around the animals. Everything from the aquarium temperature to the pool depth to the lighting is designed so the animals thrive. It is fully enclosed, which means you are comfortable whatever the weather is doing outside, and the animals behave naturally.
The aquarium touch pool is where most people start. Close to 150 sharks and rays move through shallow water, from Port Jackson sharks and epaulette sharks to fiddler rays, eagle rays and shovelnose rays. You can interact with them, get up close with them, feed them. The animals come and go as they please. Watch them glide past, feel the different textures, feed them directly. Freshwater eels up to 1.2 metres and tessellated moray eels share the space too. If you want to get into the water with them, there is an optional upgrade that lets you immerse yourself completely in their world. It changes the whole experience.
Hugo's Rescued Reptile Encounter runs throughout the day. The animal care team is on hand to bring out snakes, lizards and bearded dragons for you to meet and interact with. You get to interact with them, feel their skin, watch how they move, and the team will talk you through what makes each one special. They have worked with these animals for years and genuinely enjoy sharing that knowledge.
The Crocodile Encounters billabongs are included with this ticket. Three separate pools house baby crocodiles, juvenile estuarine crocodiles just over a metre long, and Rocksteady, a 4.8 metre, 800 kilogram saltwater crocodile. Get close to an 800 kilogram predator from the viewing platform, see the scale and understand what they need to thrive. It is something most people never get to do.
Out in the farmyard, sheep, goats and an alpaca round out the day. You are welcome to bring a picnic and stay as long as you like.
The whole operation is designed around making sure the animals live well and visitors get a genuine experience watching them do it. Whether you are looking for a great family day in Port Stephens, a wildlife experience in the Hunter Region, or simply something different, this is it. The team genuinely loves what they do, and that comes through in every interaction.
