What you can expect

Périgueux is a true open-air museum. Over the course of a 2.5-hour walking tour, travel back through nearly 2,000 years of history between Gallo-Roman Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance, to understand how the city was built, transformed, and embellished over the centuries.

The tour begins with the vestiges of Gallo-Roman Vesona, with major monuments such as the imposing cella of the Temple of Vesona and the remains of the amphitheater. Then, a change of era: head to Le Puy-Saint-Front, passing by the Romanesque church of Saint-Étienne and the last elements of the ancient fortifications. You will then stroll through narrow, cobbled streets in search of clues to medieval everyday life: artisan shops, old dwellings, half-timbered houses, and often discreet architectural details.

At the top of the hill, take time to admire the Cathedral of Saint-Front, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known for its Byzantine-influenced architecture, it is said to have inspired Paul Abadie when designing the Sacré-Cœur. Admission to the cathedral is scheduled according to the opening hours.

A City of Art and History, Périgueux also reveals its secrets in courtyards and less frequented passages. The tour ends in style with the decorative facades and Renaissance mansions, perfect for a few photos and to capture the elegance of the city through the ages.
