Overview

Trained in visual art and cultural mediation, I am delighted to share the pleasure of Matisse's luminous works. For this exhibition, the Grand Palais and the Centre Pompidou Collections chose to present a wide variety of works designed at the end of his career. At that time, he eliminated from his practice anything that might hinder him.
Knowing your personal journey better and understanding your approach through these works will help you appreciate what can be confusing at first. From a sensitive observation of paintings, drawings, cut-out gouaches, but also of printed works, on paper or on fabric and stained glass, one can become aware of the freedom he showed until the end of his life.

Nothing destined Matisse to paint. Yet his boldness has tipped many conventions. Given the apparent simplicity of portraits, silhouettes, or the confusing radicality of his paintings, how can we better understand the upheavals he has caused? The works of the end of his life, a period of intense renewal, show the balances he has achieved, in the confrontation between line and color, or in the dialogue between empty and full, for example. Through multiple techniques, his compositions such as those of the Interiors of Vence, or the Jazz album, brim with vitality. The graphic rhythms of Blue Nudes, the joy of the Creole Dancer’s colours, the power of the cut-out gouache patterns, let yourself be surprised by a drawing, the light of a stained glass window or one of the 300 works in this emotionally rich exhibition. During this guided tour, we will observe together what emerges from the works and I will bring elements on the approach.
