What you can expect
Begin your journey with a short drive across the iconic Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge, offering a panoramic view of the Suriname River. Arrive at Peperpot Nature Park, a 700-hectare sanctuary that was once one of the oldest coffee and cocoa plantations in the country. Today, the jungle has reclaimed the land, creating a unique ecosystem where history and nature live side-by-side.
Guided by a local naturalist, walk along the shaded “Coffee Trail.” Keep your eyes peeled for the playful Saimiri (squirrel monkeys) jumping through the canopy and slow-moving sloths hanging from the ancient trees. The park is a paradise for bird lovers, with over 200 species recorded. As you walk, encounter the skeletal remains of the old factory and the plantation houses, providing a hauntingly beautiful look into Suriname’s 18th-century heritage.
To conclude your nature escape, take a traditional wooden tent-boat (tentboot) for a short cruise on the Suriname River as the sun begins to set. The cool river breeze and the sounds of the jungle waking up at dusk provide a tranquil end to the adventure. Your guide will share stories of the riverside communities and the legendary “Water Spirits” of Surinamese folklore.
