Board one of the whimsical cat trains such as the Strawberry Train, Tama Train, or Toy Train—a delightful journey through feline fantasy. (Train type depends on schedule.) Senjojiki is a unique coastal rock formation on the western shore of Shirahama in Wakayama Prefecture. Formed by centuries of wave erosion from the Pacific Ocean, the layered sandstone terrain resembles a series of overlapping rock slabs. Covering about 4 hectares—enough to fit a thousand tatami mats, hence the name “Senjojiki”—this natural wonder is one of Shirahama’s iconic sights, alongside Sandanbeki and Engetsu Island. It’s especially famous for its sunsets, often selected among the “100 Best Sunsets in Japan.” With its dramatic coastal cliffs, roaring ocean waves, and secluded atmosphere, watching the sun dip into the Pacific here feels like standing at the edge of the world.
Sandanbeki Cave
  • 30m
  • Admission ticket included
Sandanbeki Cliffs & Sandanbeki Cave – Towering Cliffs and Pirate Legends Part of the Yoshino-Kumano National Park, Sandanbeki is a striking cliffside attraction in Shirahama, also known as a romantic spot for couples. The cliff stretches 2 kilometers into the ocean and rises 50 to 60 meters high, with a viewing platform offering panoramic sea views. These dramatic cliffs have witnessed many historical events; during the Heian period (794–1185), pirates once hid in the cave beneath. You can take an elevator 36 meters down into the cave, where sea erosion has carved mysterious passageways. Inside, you’ll find displays of pirate-related artifacts and fascinating natural formations.
