What you can expect

This hands-on cultural experience brings together two iconic elements of Vietnamese heritage: Bo Bat ceramics and the traditional Vietnamese conical hat (nón lá).

Bo Bat ceramics originate from Bồ Bát village, now known as Bạch Liên village in Ninh Binh, one of the oldest ceramic centers in Vietnam. With a history dating back over a thousand years, Bo Bat is widely regarded as the cradle of Vietnamese ceramics. Its refined ivory-white glaze, rare local clay, and durable firing techniques once supplied pottery to the royal courts during the Đinh and Lý dynasties. When the capital moved north, artisans from Bo Bat later founded Bat Trang, Vietnam’s most famous ceramic village today.

In this workshop, guests will create a ceramic mosaic on a traditional Vietnamese conical hat using authentic broken Bo Bat ceramic shards. These fragments, once considered waste, are carefully selected and transformed into a meaningful artwork. As you work, your host will introduce the history of Bo Bat ceramics, explain the unique clay and glaze, and share how ancient craftsmanship continues to influence Vietnamese culture today. The finished conical hat becomes more than a souvenir—it is a personal cultural artifact carrying stories of history, resilience, and creativity.

The experience continues with a visit to Tam Coc Museum, where guests gain deeper insight into local life and rural heritage. At the museum, visitors will listen to local stories connected to farming traditions, explore agricultural tools and cultural artifacts, and experience the traditional manual rice-processing cycle, from paddy to grain. This part of the visit highlights the close relationship between ceramics, agriculture, and daily life in northern Vietnam.

Designed as a slow and meaningful cultural journey, this experience is ideal for travelers seeking authentic, hands-on activities that connect history, craftsmanship, and local life in Ninh Binh.
