What you can expect
Begin your journey with a pickup from Livorno Cruise Port. Travel along a scenic road through the Tuscan countryside to reach the beautiful Roman and Medieval village of Volterra, which seems as though it has been frozen in time.
Volterra is a walled mountaintop town, famous for its alabaster production and for its Etruscan walls of which there are still-standing ruins. During the drive, see its unique clay hills, where there are a lot of quarries of alabaster. Alabaster is one of the most used raw materials from local craftsmen to make beautiful handmade artifacts.
Once you arrive in Volterra, admire the impressive Roman Theatre, built during the 1st century BC and excavated in the 1950s. Be led through the narrow streets and small squares of the town to discover Piazza dei Priori, with the famous Palazzo dei Priori, the Palazzo Pretorio (external), the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Etruscan City Walls with the ancient Etruscan port, and the Medicean Fortress.
Enjoy a fascinating walk through Etruscan, Medieval, and Renaissance courts, during which you will visit the traditional shops of alabaster and local crafts. In Volterra you will have free time for shopping or to get lost in the history of this town.
Next, head to Bolgheri, a small, elegant village on the Tuscan coast of Italy, in the province of Livorno, renowned for its wine, understated beauty, and timeless atmosphere. It is most famously approached by the Viale dei Cipressi, a straight, nearly five-kilometer avenue lined with centuries-old cypress trees that has become one of the most iconic landscapes in Tuscany.
The village itself is compact and charming, centered around a medieval castle and a stone gate that opens into a quiet piazza with cafés, wine bars, and artisan shops. Bolgheri is internationally known for its wine culture. It is the birthplace of the “Super Tuscan” movement, producing prestigious wines such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Masseto. The surrounding countryside is a mosaic of vineyards, olive groves, and gentle hills, with the Tyrrhenian Sea nearby influencing the climate and giving the wines their distinctive balance and elegance.
