What you can expect
Take a step into the past on this walking tour of Krakow’s Nowa Huta district. Experience this neighborhood that is a time capsule of the communist ideal in the easternmost district of Krakow. Marvel at the architecture designed to be a model communist city, that has become an anti-communist hub.
Start the journey in the heart of the former communist city stopping at the enormous Central Square (Plac Centralny). Explore the area’s most notable landmark that was planned right after WWII, but is like a museum today, with many architectural styles and ideas from the past.
See the spot where a huge monument of Lenin used to stand, and then visit a local bar for a shot of vodka, just as you may have done if you were in the communist era.
Next, take some photos of a real Russian tank left after the war and learn about the huge protection system invented by the communist architects. Explore a market where the locals spend their time socializing, buying groceries, and selling clothes and homemade sweets.
Along the way, snack on Zapiekanka, a typical communist treat in a local bar, and visit a huge church known as the Lord’s Ark, which became a symbol of the long fight for freedom and democracy. Marvel at the architecture of the church that was built by residents completely by hand.
Gain a better sense of the communist history in Poland and experience one of the most unique districts in the city. Some of the proceeds from the tour help support local conservation, heritage, and culture.
