After touring the Old Town, we recommend heading to the San Giovanni Fortress in the early evening, one of Kotor's top attractions.
Situated on a hill named San Giovanni, this fortress is a masterpiece of architectural design, developed over a millennium from the 9th to the 19th century. Its walls, reaching up to 20 meters in height and stretching over 4.5 kilometers, are a major reason why Kotor has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1797.

Home to the Faculty of maritime studies, the Institute of marine biology, and the Home of pupils and students, Dobrota also offers excellent restaurants and charming seaside cafes that capture the ambiance of ancient Boka. Its promenade runs along the coast for several kilometers, passing small stone piers, splendid old palaces, and numerous churches.

On the opposite side of the Bay of Kotor from Dobrota, nestled amidst the mild climate and gentle coast of Vrmac, lies the village of Prčanj. In the region, it’s famous for its highly effective Institute for Respiratory Treatment, benefiting from its ideal natural location. Today, it is a treasure trove of art and culture, with its narrow seaside promenade, charming restaurants, and Mediterranean cafes offering stunning views of the sea and hills.

Fort Vrmac - Old Austro-Hungarian Fortress
2h
Apart from the fascinating San Giovanni fortress, which became part of the extensive fortification system despite its earlier existence, Kotor and the entire Bay of Boka Kotorska are dotted with hidden fortresses in the hills above the city.
Fort Vrmac is Austro-Hungarian fortification located near Tivat, Montenegro, on the Vrmac ridge. Established in 1860, the current structure was built between 1894 and 1897. Today, Fort Vrmac stands as one of the best-preserved Austro-Hungarian fortifications in the Bay of Kotor region.
Fort Gorazda
2h
Fort Gorazda, built by the Austro-Hungarian Empire near Kotor, between 1884 and 1886, features a unique 100-ton Gruson rotating turret, the last of its kind. During World War I, the fort engaged in artillery duels with Montenegrin batteries on Mount Lovćen but remained intact after an Austrian offensive in 1916. Used as a Yugoslav Army depot until the early 1990s, Fort Gorazda is now abandoned and open to public visits.
Kotor Serpentine
3h
This incredible road with 25 sharp bends climbs up to 900m above sea level, offering a thrilling experience and breathtaking viewpoints. At the top, enjoy cafes like Bar Horizont, a must-visit in Kotor.
Another way to see Kotor from above is the newly opened "Kotor cable car," which ascends to 1316m above sea level. This adventure offers spectacular views, and at the top, you can enjoy a cafe with a great selection of cakes and rent a bike.
