What you can expect
Begin your journey with a comfortable drive from Kathmandu, passing terraced hillsides, lush forests, and quaint villages along the way. After approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, reach the sacred hilltop site of Namobuddha, one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal.
According to legend, this is the very place where a young prince—believed to be a previous incarnation of Lord Buddha—selflessly offered his life to a starving tigress and her cubs. A beautifully crafted stupa stands here to commemorate this act of compassion.
At Namobuddha, explore the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, a vibrant Tibetan Buddhist monastery nestled among pine forests and panoramic views. The monastery is home to hundreds of monks and offers a peaceful ambiance where you may witness prayer ceremonies, explore the intricate temple interiors, and even interact briefly with monks to gain insight into monastic life. On clear days, the location also rewards visitors with distant views of the Himalayan range.
From Namobuddha, continue with a scenic downhill hike to the ancient town of Panauti. The 7–8 km walk takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours at a leisurely pace. Along the trail, pass through terraced farms, small hamlets, and orange groves, making it an ideal opportunity to enjoy the rural beauty of Nepal. It’s a moderate hike suitable for most travelers, and your local guide will enrich the journey with stories about the area’s culture, ecology, and traditions.
Upon arrival in Panauti, step into a living museum of medieval Newari culture. This ancient town, built at the confluence of two rivers (with a mythical third believed to flow invisibly), is dotted with well-preserved temples, shrines, and traditional Newar houses. At its heart lies the Indreshwar Mahadev Temple, one of the oldest surviving Hindu temples in Nepal, known for its stunning wooden architecture and historical significance.
Stroll through cobbled streets, visit temples dedicated to both Hindu and Buddhist deities, and observe daily life that has changed little over the centuries. Panauti is unique for its deep-rooted community spirit and heritage conservation; many families still follow traditional lifestyles and rituals passed down through generations.
Your guide will help you discover hidden courtyards, explain the symbolism behind temple carvings, and share stories about Panauti’s festivals, including the famous Makar Mela, which takes place every 12 years and draws thousands of pilgrims.
After exploring Panauti, enjoy a relaxing return drive to Kathmandu in the late afternoon, reflecting on the spiritual depth and cultural richness you’ve experienced.
