Discover the Vredefort Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a private full-day tour from Johannesburg at best prices, with German, French & Dutch speaking guides. Learn about the impact of a 10 km meteorite that hit the earth 2,023 billion years ago and see the remains of the impact. This tour has a minimum of 2 guests.
Begin your tour with a short drive through Johannesburg to meet the N1 highway south, towards Cape Town. The drive to Parys is about 130 km and takes about 1.5 hours. Go to the farm of your guide, Prof Graeme Addisson, who has written many articles on the Vredefort Dome.
His b+b, Otters’ Haunt, lies on the banks of the Vaal River, one of the oldest rivers in the world, and the only major river cutting directly through the meteorite crater. Listen to an excellent presentation on the Dome which takes around 90 minutes (for own account) which is followed by a question and answer session.
Then, take a drive in the area to observe sections of the Dome, in the immediate vicinity. After stopping for lunch (for own account) at a convenient location, head back to Johannesburg. If time permits, stop at the commemorative site of the Sharpeville massacre in 1960.
The tour ends by returning to your departure point via interesting parts of the northern suburbs of Johannesburg.
