What you can expect
The starting point of this varied mountain tour is Geitau station near Bayrischzell. From there, the path leads comfortably through meadows and forests towards Wendelstein. The ascent gradually becomes steeper, but always rewards you with beautiful views of the Leitzach Valley and the surrounding peaks of the Bavarian Pre-Alps. Via the Panoramaweg, you'll finally reach the summit area of the Wendelstein at an altitude of 1,838 meters, where an impressive 360-degree panorama over the Alps opens up.
There's a lot to discover at the summit: this is where you'll find the highest church in Germany, the Wendelstein Church. Right next to it is the striking weather station, which you can spot from afar. The Wendelstein Cave, one of the highest show caves in Germany, is also located at the summit. You can also reach the Wendelstein without a long hike via the historic Wendelsteinbahn from Brannenburg and the Wendelstein cable car from Bayrischzell. There are also several places to stop for something to eat or drink at the top.
We're planning a break of about an hour at the summit to enjoy the view, take photos, or have a leisurely meal. If you want, you can also end the hike here and, at your own expense, either take the cable car to Bayrischzell or the historic cogwheel railway to Brannenburg in the valley.
The descent then leads back to Geitau via varied paths – first along alpine trails and later through forests and alpine pastures. Overall, the tour offers around 12 kilometers of track and over 1,000 meters of altitude, making it a sporty but very rewarding day tour with impressive mountain scenery in the Bavarian Alps.
