What you can expect
8:45 AM to 9:15 AM – During this time, we pick up guests from hotels located in the center of Arequipa.
9:15 AM – We begin our journey on the Ruta del Sillar, which is a sightseeing tour with a lot of history and living culture, where we visit quarries and areas where the ashlar originated. The first stop will be the Añashuayco Quarry, which we will reach in approximately 45 minutes. It is currently in operation, and the stonemasons start their work very early. There, we can see an immense canyon with cliffs (ignimbrite walls) that are several meters high, formed by the extraction for the creation of the ashlar. At this point, we will tell you the history of the ashlar, its elaboration, and the use it has always had. In this quarry, you can see a large carving of the Compañía de Jesús Church made by the quarrymen themselves. We can also visit some of them so that they can explain to us what their daily work is like and let us experience cutting one of their stone blocks ourselves.
We will then travel to the Quebrada de Culebrillas, which is 30 minutes away from Añashuayco. Once there, we'll take a walk of approximately 20 minutes inside the small canyon formed by the passage of water, which has walls of 15 to 20 meters. As we go deeper into the canyon, the walls increase in height. At the end of the hike, we'll be able to see petroglyphs made by the Wari Culture more than a thousand years ago. Before returning to the city, we'll see the Apachetas, which are stone formations placed one on top of the other. They're a symbol of gratitude to nature and also a good luck charm, and they create a mystical feeling.
