What you can expect

The Brazilian Way of St. James, officially recognized by the Cathedral of Santiago in Spain, is a spiritual and cultural journey of approximately 22 kilometers through the north of Santa Catarina Island, in Florianópolis. The walk combines self-discovery, trails, and paradisiacal beaches, offering a unique experience of connection with nature, local culture, and spirituality. Along the way, hikers pass four churches, four beaches, and two trails, on an itinerary that provides moments of reflection and overcoming challenges. The journey begins at the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Canasvieiras, where pilgrims receive safety information and details about the journey. The route continues along the coast of Canasvieiras, taking advantage of the quiet beaches until reaching Praia da Cachoeira do Bom Jesus, offering a gentle and pleasant start. The next stop is the Church of São Pedro, in Ponta das Canas, a chapel that celebrates local fishermen. Then, the path continues to Praia da Lagoinha, known for its paradisiacal scenery and calm waters.

The first trail on the route is Morro do Rapa, at an altitude of 160 meters. The climb is challenging, but the panoramic view from the top rewards the effort. During the trail, you can see local wildlife, such as blue jays and marmosets. The vegetation of the Atlantic Forest is also enchanting, providing a complete immersion in nature.

After descending the hill, you arrive at Praia Brava, and from there the second trail begins, Morro das Feiticeiras. This stretch of forest is surrounded by local stories about witches and sorceresses, linking the sacred to the mystical. The descent leads to Praia dos Ingleses, where the Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes Church, founded in 1839, marks another important historical point. Along the way, pilgrims have the chance to appreciate the local culture, with its strong connection to the sea and spirituality.

The walk ends at the Sagrado Coração de Jesus Sanctuary in Ingleses, where pilgrims receive their pilgrim's credential. This symbolic moment marks the end of the journey. The accredited guide shares information about the history of the churches, the fishing culture, and the significance of the Camino de Santiago, further enriching the experience.

The Brazilian Way of St. James offers more than just a hike; it is a unique opportunity to connect with the nature and culture of Santa Catarina Island. Each section of the route provides moments of tranquility, reflection, and learning, allowing you to experience the charm of the region in an authentic and immersive way. Accompanied by accredited guides, you will have an enriching and safe experience, exploring stunning beaches, challenging trails, and historic churches. Whether you want to deepen your spirituality or simply enjoy the natural scenery, this is a journey worth taking.
